John Day Smallmouth:

You have to try one of our clients favorite float trips on the beautiful John Day River! Friendly guides, good food, and great scenery.
Just 3 hours from Portland, the John Day River is Oregon’s longest free flowing river. With all three of its forks, the river is about 300 miles long! This beautiful river is home to wild steelhead, John Day smallmouth bass and a good number of Chinook salmon.

In 1974 the Oregon Dept. of Fish & Game successfully planted 50 pair of smallmouth bass to help fight the increasing population of Pike minnows and other trash fish. Now we enjoy a great smallmouth fishery in the middle and lower John Day River.

The sections we choose to conduct our 4 day-4 night Float Trips are centralized around the town of Fossil Oregon. The first night of your stay is with the Wilson’s Bed and Breakfast. This is a full time working cattle ranch in the heart of the juniper valleys of eastern Oregon. The ranch is fantastic and the home cooked breakfast alone is worth the trip. Many of our guests return for other activities offered by the Wilson’s such as Horseback riding, cattle drives, fly-fishing schools, Fossil hunting and just relaxing.

This John Day River float trip is four days and three nights on the river. This section of the John Day River is designated Wild and scenic. The beautiful rock walled canyon with its Juniper trees flanking the valleys and rims looks like a geological "Disneyland”. The scenery, colors and wildlife make for a great float trip… yet there are all those John Day smallmouth bass!

If you are a beginner to fly fishing we can have you casting and landing aggressive smallmouth bass in no time! You can expect to catch 25 fish a day or up to 100 small mouth bass per day if you have some experience and a strong arm!
Just a 25 foot cast from our self bailing rafts will have you catching lots of smallmouth bass. With only 2 guests and a river guide per raft, there is plenty of room. Your lunch and drinks will also go down river with you, as well as a day bag for misc. gear.

In the late afternoon its time to relax as we float into a complete and fully set up camp on the banks of the scenic John Day River!
We will provide a deluxe camp with excellent meals, cots, tents, outhouse, everything but the following... shuttles or gratuities, sleeping bag, personal gear, hot weather clothing some light rain gear, sunglasses, sun screen a big hat,and a fishing license (Must purchase before you arrive.)
We recommend a 3-5wt fly rod for John Day smallmouth bass with a w/f fly line. We will supply the bass poppers and leaders.
